Horizontal Scroll Bar Missing

Published: 24 Apr 2013
Last Modified Date: 20 Jul 2023

Issue

When interacting with a text table that has multiple dimensions on either the Columns or Rows shelf, the horizontal scroll bar does not appear. Furthermore, the dimensions on either shelf are cut off.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Text table

Resolution

Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 2019.4 or a newer version. Click here for downloads of current and previous versions of Tableau Desktop: Tableau Desktop Downloads and Release Notes. For more information on current releases, see Upgrade Tableau Desktop and Desktop Upgrade.

Option 2

If you cannot upgrade, see the following workaround:
  1. Place only the absolute necessary dimensions on the Rows or Columns shelf.
  2. Drag any remaining dimensions to Detail on the Marks Card.

Cause

Horizontal Scroll Bar on Tables have been added to Tableau Desktop 2019.4.

Tableau shows a horizontal scroll bar for measures, but not for dimensions. When only dimensions are included on either the Columns or Rows shelf, the lower horizontal scroll bar will not display. Dimensions are treated as headers for measure aggregations and do not generate a horizontal scroll bar when they exceed the width of the view.

Additional Information

As an alternative, you can drag dimensions to Detail. When you drag dimensions to Detail, they will appear in the marks' tooltip. Tooltips can be formatted and customized to contain multiple dimensions in any order desired.
