Site level Guest access is not functional if the Default site on the deployment does not have guest access enabled. Guest access can be on or off on various sites, but if guest access is not enabled on the Default site, an unexpected error will occur.  Upon trying to load view, the end user is presented with the following error:

An unexpected error occurred. If you continue to receive this error please contact your Tableau Server Administrator.

Would you like to reset the view?

  • Tableau Server 2018.3.0, 2018.3.1, 2018.3.2
  • Guest account
  • Multiple sites

Upgrade to Tableau Server 2018.3.3, or a newer version.  Click here for downloads of current and previous versions of Tableau Server: Tableau Server Downloads and Release Notes. For more information on current releases, see Upgrade Tableau Server and Server Upgrade.

As a workaround, enabling Guest access on the Default site will allow other sites with Guest access enabled to work properly.

This behavior is related to known issue ID 850140 and was resolved in the 2018.3.3 release of Tableau Server, and all more recent versions.
