Google Analytics Connections Do Not Contain Latest Data in Tableau

Published: 07 Jul 2023
Last Modified Date: 08 Jul 2023

Issue

Workbooks and data sources using the Google Analytics connector do not retrieve the latest data, even after successfully performing an extract refresh.

Environment

Tableau Cloud
Tableau Server
Tableau Desktop

Resolution

For locally installed software perform the following:

1. Upgrade to Tableau version 2023.1.2 or newer.
2. Download and install the new Google Analytics 4 driver from the Tableau Exchange.
3. Rebuild workbooks or data sources using the new Google Analytics 4 connector.

For Tableau Cloud

The Google Analytics 4 connector will be available soon.

Cause

As of July 1, 2023, Google Universal analytics properties will stop processing data and Universal Analytics properties will eventually be retired. The Google Analytics connector in Tableau only connects to Universal Analytics properties and does not support the new Google Analytics 4 properties intended to replace Universal Analytics.

Additional Information

There is no seamless or automatic migration of workbooks and data sources from Universal Analytics to Google Analytics 4.  The data model in Google Analytics 4 is different from Universal Analytics, so workbooks and data sources will need to be rebuilt from scratch.
