When creating a backup file, the backup may not be created successfully and instead temporary files with extension like .tsbak.tmp123A are created.  For example:

Creating archive //XXX.XX.XX.XX/TableauBkSDC$/stagebkfile-2016-01-16.tsbak.tmp3418D

You may also see errors such as:

Tableau Server

Use a local path when creating the backup file.
For example: tabadmin backup d:\tableau\tableau server\10.0\bin\backup.tsbak

Depending on what path is specified, Tableau Server may have to utilize the network and/or other machines to move the backup file from its local temp location to the location specified. This may introduce network latency issues or slow disk performance to the backup process which can cause errors.

Additional Information

To troubleshoot, start by placing the backup file on the same drive Tableau Server is installed to. If this is successful, you can try placing the backup file on different drives on the same machine, and then other network locations.
