Issue

When using 'Replace Data Source', some fields may become invalid and also have '(1)' appended to their names. For example, [User ID] becomes [User ID (1)].

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop

Resolution

In addition to having the same field names in the workbook (not the remote column names), ensure that the data roles of the fields (such as Discrete Dimension or Continuous Measure) are the same as well.

Cause

In order for 'Replace Data Source' to work, in addition to having the same field names in the workbook (not the remote column names), the data roles of the field (e.g. Discrete Dimension, Continuous Measure) have to be the same as well.

Additional Information

The 'Describe' option (in the field's context menu in the Data pane) can be used to get the details of a field in each data source. For more information, see Get Details About Fields and Sheets in a Workbook.

For more information about converting a measure to a dimension, see this document.
