Failed to Start Process "/Applications/Tableau Desktop 10.X/"

When attempting to connect to a Hadoop Impala or Hive data source in Tableau Desktop from a Mac, the following error may occur:
"Failed to start process /Applications/Tableau Desktop 10.X/"


  • Tableau Desktop
  • Mac OS
  • Cloudera Hadoop Hive or Impala


This error appears to be caused by an incompatibility between Tableau, and the Cloudera ODBC Hadoop Impala driver 2.5.37 and Hive driver 2.5.24 (Mac version).

Additional Information

Having either incompatible driver can cause the issue, e.g. connecting to a Hive source when the incompatible Impala driver is installed.
