Creating or refreshing extracts from workbooks with a MySQL data connection is very slow or can take up to an hour to create.

  • Tableau Desktop
  • MySQL

To resolve this issue you can do one of the following tasks:
  • Download and install the MySQL 5.2.x drivers. Tableau recommends the MySQL 5.2.x 32-bit Unicode ODBC driver that you can access from the Drivers page.
  • Alternatively, connect to MySQL using the general  ODBC option (Other Databases (ODBC)), instead of the native MySQL connection. By using this option, you can take advantage of the Tableau data customization (.tdc) file, which allows for a more customized connection experience.

This issue is typically caused by the following situations:
  • Data set that has about a million rows and multiple tables.
  • Data set is not in the First Normal Form (1NF) or is relatively flat.
