Issue

When exporting a site from a distributed Hyper-enabled Tableau Server for Windows installation that does not have a hosted Hyper/Data Engine instance on the Primary host machine, the following error might occur:

"Couldn't export <workbook/datasource>_reduced item for id  <ID>"

Environment

  • Tableau Server 10.5 (and later versions) and 2018 (and later versions) for Windows
  • Windows Server

Resolution

Option 1

As a Tableau Server Administrator, upgrade to Tableau Server . For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Server in Tableau Help.

Option 2 (Workaround)

As an Administrator, manually start a Hyper instance on the primary computer:
  1. Open an Administrative command prompt and run this command against the Tableau Server installation directory's "hyper" subfolder.
    • For example for 10.5: "D:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server\10.5\hyper\hyperd.exe" --no-password --config "D:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server\data\tabsvc\config\hyper\hyper_standalone.yml" run
  2. Leave the command prompt window with the aforementioned command running.
  3. Perform the site export as normal.
  4. When finished, press ctrl-c in the window running the script or close the command window.

Cause

This behavior is related to a known issue (ID: 775997) which has been fixed in a recent release of Tableau Server.
