Published Excel Files Become Locked When Using Excel Connector

When using the Excel connector for data sources published to Tableau Server, Excel files might become locked and updates to the file cannot be saved, even when data extract refreshes continue to happen without issue.


  • Tableau Server 8.2.5 and earlier versions

Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Server 8.2.6 or a later version. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Server.

Option 2

Use the JET connector
  1. Open Tableau Desktop
  2. On the start page, under Connect, click Excel.
  3. To connect to the Excel file using the Microsoft Jet-based connection, in the Open dialog box, click the Open drop-down menu, and then select Open with Legacy Connection. The data source page appears.

Option 3

Ensure that the Tableau Server Run As User account has Read Only access to the Excel file.


This behavior is a known issue which has been corrected in more recent versions.
