Excel Data Is Treated in a Case-Insensitive Way

When you are using Microsoft Excel data sources, Tableau Desktop treats the data in a case-insensitive manner. For example, field names Sales and sales will be read by Tableau Desktop as the same field.

  • Microsoft Excel

To maintain case sensitivity, use the following workaround:
  1. Save the Microsoft Excel file as a .csv file.
  2. In Tableau Desktop, connect to the .csv file. For more information, see Text File in Tableau Help.
  3. In the Data Connection dialog box, select Import all data to create an extract.
  4. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the desired folder, and then click Save.
