Errors " Backup failed!" and "System ERROR: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)" After Initiating a Back-up

When a backup is initiated with "tabadmin backup" on Tableau Server the following error may occur:

"Error: Backup failed!"

Additionally, the following errors might also occur: 

  • In tabadmin.log: System ERROR: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
  • In Windows Event: System Disk "The device, \Device\Harddisk1\DR1, has a bad block"


  • Tableau Server 10.5.3
  • Windows


Work with your IT Team to try the following resolutions: 
  1. Perform a Windows maintenance to check the disk and attempt to repair bad cluster: "chkdsk /f /r"  (depending on the Windows version, this cannot be run while processes access files on the disk)
  2. Or, reinstall Tableau Server on a new hard drive. For more information about uninstalling Tableau Server, see the following articles on Tableau Help: 


  • The backup error occurs because 7zip returns an error during the creation of a temporary zip file.
  • 7zip returns the System error because the Operating System returned this error during a read/write on a file.
  • Windows events show a system error for the disk at the time of the backup
