"Error (xxx,12) missing elements in content model" After Attempting to Open a Workbook in Tableau Desktop

Published: 14 Nov 2018
Last Modified Date: 15 Sep 2019

Issue

When trying to open a previously working Tableau Workbook in Tableau Desktop 2018.3, an error similar to the following might occur:

"Unable to complete action
Errors occurred while trying to open the workbook "<file path>".
The load was not able to complete successfully
Error(96203,12) missing elements in content model '(document-format-change-manifest.repository-location?.preferences_style-theme?.style.local-data?.datasources?.datasource-relationships?.mapsources?.shared-views?.actions?.worksheets?.dashboards?.windows?.thumbnails?.external?.referenced-extensions?(id: C:\Users\USERNAME\Temp......twb)"

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 2018.3.0
  • Windows 10
  • Microsoft Azure SQL

Resolution

Open the workbook in a prior version of Tableau Desktop, such as 2018.2.2. If able to be opened and look at each worksheet to see if there is something wrong with it. From there, fix or delete the view and resave the workbook as a .twb.

It should now open in Tableau Desktop 2018.3 without error.

Cause

The workbook has a corrupt worksheet or dashboard.

Additional Information

If a corrupted worksheet or dashboard cannot be found when opening the workbook in an earlier version of Tableau Desktop, please send the following to Tableau Technical Support:
  1. The affected .twb workbook.
  2. Clean Desktop Log Files from the attempt to open the workbook. For more information about this, see Sending Large Files to Tableau Support and Sending Tableau Desktop Log Files.
