Error "Worksheet Unavailable" Opening Workbooks Containing Published Data Source

When opening multiple instances of workbooks containing published data sources, one of the following error messages might occur:

Worksheet Unavailable
"There was a problem connecting to the "Data Source Name" data source. Edit Connection


Dashboard Unavailable   
There was a problem connecting to the '<dataSourceName>' data source.
Edit Connection


An error occurred while communication with the Tableau Server data source.
No Tableau Server user found. Unable to connect to the server "". Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.



  • Tableau Online
  • Tableau Server
  • Tableau Desktop 9.3.2 and earlier versions


Try one of the following workarounds: 

Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 9.3.3 or a newer version. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Desktop

Option 2

Close all instances of Tableau Desktop and re-open the workbook using a new instance. 

Option 3

Select Edit Connection and re-enter your server address and credentials. 


This behavior is related to a known issue which has been corrected in more recent versions.
