Error when using Custom SQL containing Date parameter with Impala

When connecting to Cloudera Hadoop Impala using Custom SQL with a Date parameter in Tableau Desktop, the following error occurs: 
[Cloudera][ImpalaODBC] (110) Error while executing a query in Impala: [HY000] : AnalysisException: Unsupported data type: DATE Unable to connect to the server. Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.


  • Tableau Desktop 10.3.1, 10.1.6, 10.0.5, 9.3.11
  • Cloudera Hadoop Impala


Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 10.3.3 ; 10.2.5 ; 10.1.11 ; 10.0.13 or 9.3.18. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Desktop in Tableau Help.

Option 2

Use a date time parameter instead of a date.

Note: This may not display as cleanly in the parameter control, for example 1/1/2001 may show as 1/1/2001 00:00:00. 

Option 3

Remove the date causing the issue from the custom SQL query and add it as a data source filter instead. 


This behavior is related to a known issue (ID: 671236) that has been fixed in a recent release of Tableau Desktop.
