Error upon publishing or Editing a workbook with Google Drive data source using Tableau Public Desktop

Issue

Unable to edit/publish a workbook with Google Drive data source using Tableau Public Desktop.

"An error occurred while connecting to a data-source."
 

Environment

  • All Tableau Public Desktop version older than 21.2
  • Google Drive

Resolution

If you want to download/open a workbook in Public Desktop (lower than version 21.2) that was created with a Google Drive data source, then you will need to use (or upgrade to) a Public Desktop version of 2021.2 or above.
 

Cause

Tableau Pro Desktop clients have always supported Google Drive, but Tableau Public Desktop clients are getting Google Drive support added in 2021.2 Desktop client versions. This means if a user wants to download/open a workbook in Public Desktop that was created via Web Create and backed with a Google Drive data source, then the user will need to use (or upgrade to) a Public Desktop version of 2021.2 or above. Else they will see an error that says
