Error "Unexpected response from the server: Not authorized" when SAML user attempts to log into command line utility or tabcmd to Tableau Cloud

When logging into a site on Tableau Cloud with either command line utility or tabcmd and the user is configured for SAML auth, an error may occur stating:

Unexpected response from the server: Not authorized

  • Tableau Cloud
  • SAML auth
  • Command line utility

To use the Command Line or the tabcmd utility, either of the below options can be used:
  1. Switch the users authentication type to Tableau Auth.
  2. Create a dedicated Tableau Cloud Creator user or Site Admin which uses Tableau Auth and have these services log in with that user account.
  3. If using Command line utility, Bridge Client might be a feasible workaround if SAML is required for users. Bridge does support SAML authentication.

Vote on the Tableau Community to include this update on a future release here.

The Command line utility and tabcmd both do not support SAML auth for users attempting to log in to Tableau Cloud. They must be Tableau Auth users.
