Error "Unable to Properly Calculate the Domain [...]" When Creating a Set and Clicking the Skip Button

When creating a set from a dimension in a published data source, a progress dialog might appear with a Skip button. Clicking that Skip button can cause the process to fail with an error:

Unable to complete action
Internal Error - An unexpected error occurred and the operation could not be completed.
Unable to properly calculate the domain for the field <FIELD NAME>. Displayed data may be incorrect.

  • Tableau Desktop 2019.2.2
  • Published data source on Tableau Server

Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 2019.3.6 or later.

Workaround 1

After the error occurs, performing the same steps (create set and skip the query) should load the dialog with no further errors.

Workaround 2

  1. Before the steps to create the set, right click the field in question.
  2. Then select Describe.
  3. Once the Describe dialog shows, click Load.
This should load the domain of the field with no errors and then the set creation can proceed with no further errors either.

Workaround 3

Allow the query to run. However, please note that this might affect performance.

Workaround 4

Since the issue only only occurs with published data sources, creating a local copy may also be used as a workaround.

This is a known issue that is corrected in more recent version of Tableau Desktop.
