Error "Unable to connect to the server" Connecting to Sharepoint list

Issue

When attempting to connect to Sharepoint list using the native connector, the following error may occur: 

An error occurred while communicating with the SharePoint Lists data source 'Sharepoint url" Unable to connect to the server. Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database. 

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 2018.2.6, 2018.3.4 and earlier 
  • SharePoint Lists

Resolution

Option 1:
Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 2018.2.7, 2018.3.4 or a newer version. Click here for downloads of current and previous versions of Tableau Server: Tableau Server Downloads and Release Notes. For more information on current releases, see Upgrade Tableau Server and Server Upgrade.

Option 2:
If unable to upgrade, you may be able to workaround this error by connecting via ODBC connection. 

Cause

This behavior is related to a known issue with ID 850964 which has been corrected in more recent versions.
