Error: "The My Tableau Prep repository is either read only or can't be found" Launching Tableau Prep Builder on Mac

When launching Tableau Prep on macOS Catalina 10.15, the following error occurrs: 

Error Running Tableau Prep Builder. The My Tableau Prep repository is either read only or can't be found. Check that the repository location is in a directory with write permissions or contact your System Administrator


  • Tableau Prep Builder 2019.2.3 and older versions
  • macOS Catalina 10.15


Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Prep Builder 2019.3.1 or a newer version. See Tableau Desktop Downloads and Release Notes for downloads of current and previous versions of Tableau Desktop.  For more information on current releases, see Upgrade Tableau Prep Builder and Prep Builder Upgrade.

Option 2

Manually grant permissions to the My Tableau Prep repository folder by taking the following steps:
  1. Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy
  2. Click the Privacy tab
  3. Scroll down the list on the left and click Full Disk Access
  4. Click the lock on the lower right to make changes
  5. Click the "+" symbol below the list of applications
  6. In the file dialog that opens, browse the Applications folder and select Tableau Prep Builder
  7. Click the lock again to prevent further changes
Once finished, close all open dialog windows and re-open Tableau Prep Builder. 


New permissions requirements for applications were introduced in macOS Catalina 10.15. 

This behavior is related to a known issue with ID 952365 which has been resolved in the 2019.3.1 release.
