Error: "Tableau Server could not verify that there is sufficient disk space for backup." when Creating a Backup on Tableau Server 2021.4.7 or 2022.1.2

Published: 03 Jun 2022
Last Modified Date: 22 Nov 2022

Issue

In Tableau Server 2021.4.7 or 2022.1.2, creating a backup may fail with the following error:

Tableau Server could not verify that there is sufficient disk space for backup. If you believe there is enough space, you may skip the disk space check and force creation of a backup by using the '--override-disk-space-check' option. The backup will fail if it runs out of space.

Attempting to bypass the error with the --override-disk-space-check option will still fail with the following error:

An error occurred on the server generating the backup.
This job failed due to unexpected error: 'BackupRestoreException'
BackupRestoreException(message:ProxyClient was unable to find a gRPC channel to the service 'extract_service' as required by class 'com.tableausoftware.domain.extractdata.grpc.IExtractServiceMaintenanceGrpc'.)

Environment

  • Tableau Server 2021.4.7
  • Tableau Server 2022.1.2
  • No Data Management add-on enabled
  • Multi-node, High Availability (HA) environment with either:
    • (Modern HA) Two instance of the Repository (active and passive) and a Filestore co-located on the same non-tabadmincontroller node as one of the Repository instances
    • (Classic HA) Once instance of the Repository where Filestore is co-located on the same non-tabadmincontroller node as one of the the Repository

Resolution

Upgrade Tableau Server to:

2022.1.5 or higher
2021.4.10 or higher

If an upgrade is not possible, the following options will mitigate the issue and allow for creation of backups:

Option 1: Move the Filestore process

For Modern HA environments:
In environments where a Passive Repository is co-located with a Filestore, decommission the Filestore from the Passive Repository node. This method assumes that the Active Repository is on the TSM Controller ("tabadmincontroller") node and the TSM Controller node is set as the pgsql.preferred_host (preferred active repository).

For Classic HA environments:
In environments where there is a single, Active Repository co-located with Filestore on a non-tabadmincontroller node, the Filestore can be decommissioned and/or moved to another node.

Option 2: It may also be possible to take postgres-only backups using the -po flag option with tsm maintenance backup.

Option 3: If Option 1 does not work, decommissioning the File Store processes so that there is only a single File Store in the cluster may allow backups to be performed normally.

Cause

This behavior has been fixed under ID 1420983.

Additional Information

  • This issue does not impact single-node environments
  • This issue does not impact environments where Data Management add-on licenses are actively being used (extract service is active).
  • Using --override-disk-space-check will not resolve the error
  • Setting the preferred Repository to node1 Hostname will not, by itself, work around the error
