Error "Tableau Server could not authenticate you automatically" When Using SSPI With Tableau Desktop

When trying to sign in to Tableau Server in Tableau Desktop using Windows Credentials, the following error may occur:

Tableau Server could not authenticate you automatically.
Sign in using your Tableau Server credentials.


  • Tableau Server 2021.1
  • Tableau Desktop 2021.1, 2021.2


This behavior is caused by a defect, ID 1294751, which is currently under investigation.

Use one of the following workarounds to resolve the issue:

Option 1

  1. Right-click the Tableau Desktop 2021.1 desktop shortcut, and select Properties.
  2. On the Shortcut tab, in the Target field, append -DOverride=AuthenticationDialogWebEngine:off - so it reads:
"C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau 2021.1\bin\tableau.exe" -DOverride=AuthenticationDialogWebEngine:off

3. Click OK to save the change.
4. Use this shortcut to launch Tableau Desktop 2021.1.

Option 2

1. Open Command Prompt and navigate to the Tableau Desktop 2021.1 binary folder:
cd C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau 2021.1\bin\

2. Enter the following command to start Tableau Desktop 2021.1:
tableau.exe -DOverride=AuthenticationDialogWebEngine:off


This issue is currently under investigation.
