Error "Tableau has stopped working" When Attempting to Open Tableau Desktop

When attempting to open Tableau Desktop, which has its repository on a network drive and the drive is disconnected, the following error occurs:

"Tableau has stopped working."


  • Tableau Desktop 2018.2.0
  • Windows


Use one of the following options to workaround this issue:

Option 1

Ensure that the machine Tableau Desktop is installed on can reach the network drive where the repository is located.

Option 2

Set the environment variable TAB_NOCRASHDUMPS to true. This can be set at the system level under User Variables or set locally before launching Tableau Desktop.


This is a known issue, ID 819776, that is currently being investigated.
