Error "Tableau Data Engine Error: 48041: Invalid Command: database: Path does not exist" Refreshing Extract

When refreshing a data source extract, the extract might fail with the following error message:

com.tableausoftware.nativeapi.dll.DataSourceException: Tableau Data Engine Error: 48041: Invalid Command: database: Path does not exist.
Unable to connect to the server "localhost". Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.

Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Server 9.3.4 or later. For more information, see Upgrade Tableau Server.

Option 2

Ensure the backgrounder process is licensed:
  • Tableau Server License Manager should be running.
  • FlexNet Licensing Service 64 should be running.
  • If it is unlicensed, restart Tableau Server to have a new licensing check performed.
After verifying that the backgrounder process is licensed, republish any affected data sources. If no local copy of the data source exists, restore a good backup taken prior to when the issue started.


This issue occurs if the backgrounder is unlicensed at the time an extract refresh occurs. Upgrading to 9.3.4 or later will prevent the issue from occurring in the future, but will not correct the issue if it is already occurring.  If backgrounders are already giving error 48041, the affected content will still need to be republished or restored from a backup.
