Issue

When Using Tableau Desktop to Connect to Amazon Athena through Proxy with JDBC driver, the following error occurred.

Error Code: AA76601F

Stream removed
Unable to connect to the Amazon Athena server "athena.xxxxxxxx.amazonaws.com". Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Windows

Resolution

Option 1

Add the environmental variable NO_PROXY to bypass a proxy server when accessing localhost.
  1. Click the search (magnifying glass) icon on the Windows menu.
  2. Enter sysdm.cpl to the text box and click the icon.
  3. Open the Advanced tab and click Environmental Variables.
  4. In the system variables section, click New to add the following environmental variable.
    • Variable: NO_PROXY
    • Value: 127.0.0.1,localhost
  5. Click OK to close the window.

Option 2

If the proxy setting is configured in "Internet Options", you may also need to exclude localhost there.
  1. Click the search (magnifying glass) icon on the Windows menu.
  2. Enter "Internet Options" to the text box and click the icon.
  3. Select Connections > LAN Settings > Advanced.
  4. In the Exceptions section,  add the following value.
  • 127.0.0.1;localhost
  1. Click OK to close the window.

Cause

The environmental variable NO_PROXY was not setup and the proxy server rejected/ingored the communicating request to localhost of the client machine.
When using Tableau Desktop uses a JDBC driver such Amazon Athena JDBC driver, the jprotocolserver process is responsible for communicating to Tableau Desktop and driver using localhost and if the proxy server is setup to reject or ingore the communicating request to localhost of the client machine, the jprotocolserver will fail to start then the error occurred.
