Error "Setup was unable to confirm if server has started" During Installation

When you try to install Tableau Server, the following error might occur:

Setup was unable to detect if Tableau Server has started

The following symptoms might also occur:
  • When you try to restart or reinstall Tableau Server, the error continues to occur.
  • When you run tabadmin status -v, the Tableau Server Gateway shows as stopped.
  • The following entry appears in the C:\ProgramData\Tableau\Tableau Server\data\tabsvc\logs\wgserver\tomcat*.log file:
INFO: An exception happened during JRuby-Rack startup
Input/output error - <drive letter>:/Program Files

Grant the Tableau Server Run As User explicit permissions to each folder in the path where Tableau Server is installed, including the root of the drive. If Tableau Server is in a distributed environment, grant the Run As User explicit permissions to these folders on all computers running Tableau Server, including worker servers.

For example, if Tableau Server is installed in the D:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server folder, grant the Run As User explicit permissions to:
  • D:\
  • D:\Program Files\
  • D:\Program Files\Tableau\
  • D:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server
  • Any folder and file within "D:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server"

The Tableau Server Run As Use does not have explicit permissions to all folders and/or to the root of the drive where Tableau Server is installed.
