Error "Running 'restore begin' failed" Occurs In Command Prompt When Performing A Restore Of Tableau Server Cluster

Last Modified Date: 21 Jul 2020

Issue

Error "Running 'restore begin' failed" occurs in command prompt when performing a restore of Tableau Server cluster. The following error occurs in tabadmincontroller_*.log.

pool-15-thread-1 : ERROR com.tableausoftware.tabadmin.webapp.asyncjobs.RestoreJob - Restore begin step RestoreServices failed
java.lang.RuntimeException: Running 'restore begin' failed

Environment

  • Tableau Server

Cause

The File Store process is not installed on the same node as the TSM Controller (the initial node).
If an instance of File Store does not exist on TSM Controller, due to the performance impact the restore may fail. See Tableau Server File Store for related information.

Additional Information

  • After performing a restore, it may take a few minutes for File Store processes to ensure that extracts have been synchronized to other file store nodes.
  • The File Store cannot be moved when Synchronizing. Before removing the File Store process from the initial node after restore, use "tsm status -v" command to verify if the status of File Store has changed from "File Store 0' is synchronizing" to "File Store 0' is running".
