Error "ReadBytes: Communication with the Tableau Protocol Server process was lost" When Connecting to Cloudera Impala

Issue

When connecting Tableau Server to an SSL-enabled Cloudera Impala server, the following error may occur:

The connection to the data source might have been lost.
ReadBytes: Communication with the Tableau Protocol Server process was lost.
Unable to connect to the Cloudera Hadoop server "<server>". Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.

Environment

  • Tableau Server 
  • Linux 
  • Cloudera Impala (using SSL)

Resolution

As a workaround, downgrade the Impala ODBC driver to version 2.6.2 on the Tableau Server computer.

Cause

Starting from version 2.6.3, the Cloudera Impala ODBC driver for Linux was updated to use dynamically linked libraries for OpenSSL (libssl). For more information, see [IMP-589] in the release notes for the driver.
