Error "password authentication failed " Connecting to Redshift

Issue

When you try to connect to Amazon Redshift from Tableau Desktop, if the database password contains special characters, one of the following errors might occur:
 
An error occurred while communicating with the data source.
Unable to connect to the server. Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.

FATAL: password authentication failed for user "<user name>"

FATAL: password authentication failed for user "<user name>"

Unable to connect to the server "<server name>". Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.

Invalid username or password

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Amazon Redshift

Resolution

Remove all special characters from the Redshift password.

Cause

This behavior is a limitation of Amazon Redshift. For more information, see Limits in Amazon Redshift, which mentions the following requirements in regards to passwords, "It can be any printable ASCII character (ASCII code 33 to 126) except ' (single quotation mark), " (double quotation mark), \, /, @, or space".

Customers have also reported being able to connect to Redshift using the same username/password via SQL workbench, which uses JDBC.
