Error “Not Authorized” Occurs When Sign In to Tableau Server With SAML Authentication in Tableau Desktop

Issue

When signing in to Tableau Server or activating the Tableau Desktop license with LBLM to Tableau Server using SAML, the below error occurs, and could not complete the sign-in.
Meanwhile, signing in to Tableau Server via the browser is successful. This issue only happens to Tableau Desktop.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop

Resolution

Clear the saved Sign-ins on Tableau Desktop manually with the following steps.

1. Open the Windows Registry, and navigate to the path Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Tableau\{Tableau version}

2. Delete the following folders: 
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Tableau\{Tableau version}\Cookies
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Tableau\{Tableau version}\WorkgroupLogins
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Tableau\{Tableau version}\WorkgroupSites
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Tableau{Tableau version}\WorkgroupEffectiveServers

3. Open Tableau Desktop and click Help > Settings and performance > Clear saved server sign-ins.

4. Try to sign in to Tableau Server again.
 

Cause

Old authentication information remaining on the PC causing the error.
