Error: "not A Sql Data Connection, Cannot Construct Query Function" When Publishing A Workbook To Tableau Cloud

Issue

When publishing a workbook to Tableau Cloud, the following error may occur:

An error occurred when publishing the workbook.
not a sql data connection, cannot construct query function
Unable to create extract

Resolution

Review the list of data source connections and close any empty connections. An empty data source will typically be marked with a red exclamation point in the data pane:

Cause

For workbooks with live connections to on-premise data sources, an extract must be created during publishing. An extract cannot be created for an empty data source connection, as it will result in an error and a failed publishing attempt.
