Error "No Tableau Server user found" After A Data Connection is Lost in Tableau Desktop

While connected to a published data source, the following error is displayed after a 4-hour interval or when opening multiple instances of Tableau Desktop:

"An error occurred while communicating with the data source.
No Tableau Server user found.
class DataSourceException"



  • Tableau Desktop 10.1, 10.2, 10.3
  • Tableau Online
  • Any data source with a token with an expiration time (e.g. BigQuery - 1h)


Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 10.1.12, 10.4.1 or later. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Desktop in Tableau Help. Once the access token expires or becomes invalidated, you will be either automatically reconnected or presented with a reconnect prompt in Tableau Desktop.

Option 2

In Tableau Desktop, refresh the Tableau Online data source (Right-click data source > Refresh).


We expect the Tableau Server/Online access token to expire every 4 hours (regardless of activity) or to be invalidated when switching between instances of Tableau Desktop.

This behavior is related to a known issue (ID: 688940) which has been fixed in a recent release of Tableau Desktop.
