When you try to start Tableau Server, the following error might occur:
*** The driver encountered an unknown error: org.postgresql.util.PSQLException: FATAL: no pg_hba.conf entry for host ""

At the same time, when you try to access Tableau Server in a web browser, the following error might occur:
Internal Error
Tableau Server (<version>) encountered an internal error when processing the last request

The Tableau Server status displays "RUNNING".

Tableau Server

  1. On the computer running Tableau Server, open the Command Prompt window as an administrator and run one of the following commands:
    • On a 32-bit computer: cd "C:\Program Files\Tableau\Tableau Server\<version>\bin"
    • On a 64-bit computer: cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Tableau\Tableau Server\<version>\bin"
  2. At the command prompt, run the following commands in order:
    • tabadmin stop
    • tabadmin config
    • tabadmin start

The pg_hba.conf file is the main configuration file of the Tableau Server PostgreSQL database. This file became damaged and must be repopulated from the template.

Additional Information

If the IP is (localhost loopback address), the issue may have been the inability to update postgres configuration due to out of disk space.  If the error is any other IP address, the issue is most likely that an IP address changed.  We only add IP addresses to the configuration when you run tabadmin config and then restart Tableau Server.
