Error "Maximum tables limit exceeded" Attempting to Refresh Redshift Extract

When attempting to refresh a published Amazon Redshift extract, the following error occurs:
Error occurred while trying to execute a query: [SQLState XX000] ERROR: 1040 DETAIL: Maximum tables limit exceeded. The maximum number of tables per cluster is 9900 for this instance type. The limit includes permanent and temporary tables.

  • Tableau Cloud
  • Amazon Redshift

As a workaround, disable temporary tables on Amazon Redshift.

Tableau creates temporary tables (temp tables) on the database during queries in order to improve overall performance. If creation of one of these temp tables would push the Amazon Redshift cluster over the maximum number of 9900, the operation fails.
