Error "loomTableauServerResourceBundle-VizportalPublishDatasourceExceptionMsg" When Overwriting the Published Data Source on Tableau Prep Builder

Published: 11 Nov 2019
Last Modified Date: 15 Jan 2020

Issue

When attempting to overwrite a published data source on Tableau Prep Builder, the attempt fails and the following errors might occur depending on which version of Prep Builder you are on:

2019.3.2 and 2019.4.1: "loomTableauServerResourceBundle-VizportalPublishDatasourceExceptionMsg"

2019.4.2: "System error: Unable to publish the data source "Error refreshing data source". Check that the server is running and you have correct permissions to publish to the specified project."

Environment

Tableau Prep Builder 2019.3.2, 2019.4.1, 2019.4.2.

Resolution

Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Prep Builder 2020.1.1
Please note the following, which applies to certain cases:

Note: In version 2020.1.1, Tableau Prep Builder will refresh previously published data sources and maintain any data modeling (for example calculated fields, number formatting, and so on) that might be included in the data source.  If the data source cannot be refreshed, the data source will be replaced instead.

Option 2

As a workaround, publish the data source with a new name as a workaround.

Cause

This behavior (ID: 1015533) is known issue, that has been corrected in Tableau Prep Builder 2020.1.1 and later versions.

Additional Information

Data sources may fail to refresh for a number of reasons, for example:
  • The original data source was published with an incompatible version of the product.
  • The data source failed to download from the server.
  • The .tds itself is corrupted for unknown reason, etc.
