Error "layeredprotocol missing attribute" When User Attempts to Open Any Workbook or Data Source on Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server

When a user attempts to open any workbook or data source on Tableau Server or on a Tableau Cloud site, the following error might occur:

LayeredProtocol::LayeredProtocol: Missing attribute
Unable to connect to the file "filename". Check that the file exists and that you have sufficient access privileges for it.


  • Tableau Cloud
  • Tableau Server


1. Clear the Saved Credentials in the user's Account Settings.
2. Re-add the saved credentials manually in user's Account Settings.

This issue appears to be caused by a corrupted entry in the user's saved credentials.
