Error "IPC_NamedPipe::Select(WaitForMultipleObjects): Timeout" Connecting to MySQL

Issue

When connecting to MySQL from Tableau Desktop, the following error may occur:

IPC_NamedPipe::Select(WaitForMultipleObjects): Timeout

The following error may appear in the Tableau Desktop log files:

[MySQL][ODBC 5.3(w) Driver]Authentication plugin 'mysql_old_password' cannot be loaded: The specified module could not be found.

Tableau Desktop 10.4
Windows
MySQL 4.1 and newer

Resolution

Upgrade your MySQL password to the newer format that uses a 41-byte password hash. See Updating Old Authentication Protocol Passwords at MySQL for more information.

Cause

The MySQL password used was in a deprecated format.
