Error "InvalidCharacterError" accessing Tableau in Microsoft Edge after installing Edge Update 16

Published: 21 Nov 2017

When accessing Tableau Server or Tableau Online, the following error occurs:
Unexpected error: An unexpected error occurred. If you continue to receive this error please contact your Tableau Server Administrator. Session ID [sessionIDstring] InvalidCharacterError

  • Tableau Server
  • Tableau Online
  • Microsoft Edge version 16 or higher

Option 1

As a Tableau Server Administrator, upgrade to Tableau Server 10.4.2 ;10.3.6 ; 10.2.8 or 10.1.13 For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Server in Tableau Help.

Option 2

As a temporary workaround, use an older version of Microsoft Edge (version 15 or lower) or a different web browser.

In October 2017, an update to Microsoft Edge's web platform, EdgeHTML 16, began release via some Windows Update channels, including the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

EdgeHTML 16 includes a change in behavior from previous versions which results in this error message. Technically this change is enforcing an aspect of the HTML standard, which other browsers, including older versions of Edge, have not previously enforced.

Tableau developers have investigated this issue under ID 707205.

Additional Information

To check what version of Microsoft Edge you have installed, either:
  1. Visit this web page or
  2. Click on the "Settings and more" menu (indicated by three dots on the far right of the Edge toolbar), choose Settings, and scroll down to "About this app" - Microsoft Edge 15 is represented by a version such as "Microsoft Edge 40.15063.0.0, Microsoft EdgeHTML 15.15063"
