Error "Internal communication error: Server returned nothing (no headers, no data) (localhost)" Viewing Workbook with Published Data Source

When viewing a workbook that uses a published data source the following error appears:

Internet communication error, server returned nothing (no headers, no data) (localhost).

In some cases (localhost) will not be displayed and instead may show one the computer names in the Tableau Server cluster.

The following can also be found in the dataserver logs:

"ERROR com.tableausoftware.controller.dataserver.DataServerSessionService - Error response. code:401 type:DataServerNoAuth msg:No Tableau Server user found."


Tableau Server


  1. Check 'Bypass proxy server for local addresses under 'Internet Options > Connections > LAN settings' in Internet Explorer on the computer or computers running Tableau Server
  2. The domain name, computer names, and IP addresses for every computer in the Tableau Server cluster need to be added to the 'Exceptions' list in the Internet Explorer Proxy Settings (Internet Options > Connections > LAN settings > Advanced).  Settings need to be applied to all computers running Tableau Server.

The forward proxy server settings are blocking internal communication needed by the dataserver.
