Error "Error getting ZooKeeper state: Errno::ECONNREFUSED:Connection refused - Connection refused" in Tabadmin Log

Issue

When starting Tableau Server, the process is unsuccessful and the following error might appear in the tabadmin log:

Error getting ZooKeeper state: Errno::ECONNREFUSED:Connection refused - Connection refused

Environment

  • Tableau Server 
  • Windows Server 

Resolution

Note: Tableau Server will need to be stopped and restarted to perform this resolution. The effect of the tabadmin cleanup command depends on whether the server is running or stopped. For more information, see Remove Unneeded Files.

Step 1: Create a backup

We recommend creating an archive of log files and performing a backup prior to running the resolution.

For Tableau 2018.2 and later

Step 2: Reset coordination

  1. On the computer running Tableau Server, open Command Prompt.
  2. Navigate to the Tableau Server bin folder.
  3. Run the following commands:
tabadmin stop
tabadmin cleanup --reset-coordination
tabadmin config
tabadmin restart


For Tableau 2018.2 and later

  1. On the computer running Tableau Server, open the Command Prompt
  2. Navigate to the Tableau Server bin folder
  3. Run the following commands:
tsm stop
tsm topology cleanup-coordination-service
tsm pending-changes apply
tsm restart 

Cause

The Tableau Server coordination state is corrupt or invalid.
