Error "Failed to rebuild search index" After Upgrading Tableau Server

Issue

While upgrading from Tableau Server 2019.2.3 to Tableau Server 2019.3, the upgrade script fails and one of the following errors might occur

"Failed to rebuild search index"


or

"data directory is corrupt"

 

Additionally, performing an in-place upgrade will fail while executing the upgrade-tsm script and the following error might occur: 

75% - Rebuilding the search index failed.
Running - Disabling the services used for indexing.Failed to rebuild search index.
An error occurred during installation.
An error occur while rebuilding search index.


The following scenario might occur:

  • Upgrading Tableau Server 2018.2 (or later) to 2019.3 will fail if you have changed tsm file paths: tsm File Paths - Tableau.
  • Attempting to re-run the upgrade-tsm.cmd script on the initial node fails with the error: ERROR: Data directory under "D:\Tableau\Tableau Server" for version "20192.19.08.18.2120" is corrupt. Canceling.

Environment

Tableau Server 2019.3.0

Resolution

Upgrade to Tableau Server 2019.3.1.

or try one of the following workarounds: 

  • Reset tsm file paths to their defaults prior to upgrading.
  • Perform a fresh install with default tsm paths.
  • Delay deploying Tableau Server 2019.3 until Tableau releases a patched version.
  • If attempting to re-run the upgrade-tsm.cmd script on the initial node fails, the Tableau Server administrator must clean the server using the tableau-server-obliterate script, perform a fresh install, then restore data from a backup. Cause

This was a known issue on Tableau Server which was resolved in the more recent version.
