Issue

Unable to authenticate by SAML on Tableau Online with the following error:

Exception processing SAML Response; caused by: nameID is marked non-null but is null

Environment

  • Tableau Online

Resolution

In "Edit Claim Rules" dialog below make sure the outgoing claim type are set for Name ID, email, firstName, lastName.
Add a claim for each assertion required, use the drop down to pick “Name ID” in the Outgoing Claim Type for the first claim type (Name ID).
If the Windows OS is not English, "Name ID" might be translated to the setting language. If Windows OS is Japanese, Name ID is displayed as "名前 ID" instead of "Name ID"
