Error: "Error Retrieving Domain For Field "...', Cannot Edit Aliases." When Attempting to Edit an Alias

In Tableau Desktop 9.2, 9.3, or 10.0 after dragging a continuous dimension to the view, and converting this dimension to discrete, the following error might occur if you right-click on the discrete dimension pill on the Row, Column, or Marks shelf and select Edit Aliases
Error retrieving domain for field '<FIELDNAME>', cannot edit aliases.

Additionally, the following error might occur after you right-click on any of the discrete dimension's headers in the view and select Edit Alias in Tableau Desktop 9.3 and later versions:
Internal Error - An unexpected error has occurred and the operation could not be completed

Option 1

Upgrade to Tableau Desktop 9.3.15, 10.0.9, 10.1.7, or a later version. For more information, see Upgrading Tableau Desktop

Option 2

Convert the dimension in the data pane to continuous.

Option 3

Alternatively, duplicate the field so that there are separate fields in the Data pane for discrete and continuous.


This behavior is related to a known issue (ID: 585976), which has been corrected in later versions.
