Published: 19 Jun 2014
Last Modified Date: 18 Oct 2018

Issue

When trying to connect to an Oracle data source, the following errors may occur:

Function OCIArrayDescriptorAlloc not found in oci (error 127): drivers may be out of date
Unable to connect to the server "<server address>". Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.

OR

Bad Connection: Tableau could not connect to the data source.

In addition, the Function OCIArrayDescriptorAlloc not found in oci (error 127): drivers may be out of date message appears in the tabprotosrv.txt log file.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Oracle

Resolution

Ensure the correct bit and release versions are selected when downloading the Oracle driver from the Driver Download page.

Cause

The Oracle driver version installed does not match the Tableau Desktop version being used, either in terms of "bitness" (32- or 64-bit), or Tableau release version (for example 10.3, 2018.2).
