Error "Database error 0x80004005: Invalid MDX command" When Loading a Worksheet Connected to SAP BW

Published: 18 Nov 2019
Last Modified Date: 25 Nov 2019

When loading a worksheet connected to SAP BW, if the workbook contains any String Parameters, the following error message might occur:

"Database error 0x80004005: Invalid MDX command"

Note: The worksheet returning the error does not need to be using the String Parameters, they must simply be created in the workbook.

  • Tableau Desktop
  • SAP BW

In order to avoid this error, please use one of the following workarounds:

Option 1

Change all String Parameters to Integers. Since the error only occurs when using String parameters, changing all parameters to Integers will resolve the issue.

Option 2

Save the  .tdc file attached to this article to the following locations in order to use String Parameters with SAP BW connections:
  • Tableau Desktop: Users\[your name]\Documents\My Tableau Repository\Datasources
  • Tableau Server: To use a .tdc file with Tableau Server, see this article: Using a .tdc File with Tableau Server in the Tableau Knowledge Base.

This is behavior (ID:1010914) with some versions of Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server and is currently under investigation.
