Error "data source is not supported in Tableau Desktop"

Issue

When opening a workbook that uses a legacy Excel or text data source in Tableau Desktop 2020.2 or newer, the following error may occur:

Dashboard Unavailable
The "
<data source name>" data source is not supported in Tableau Desktop.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop 2020.2 or newer
  • Excel
  • Text file

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use one of the following options:

Option 1

Use Tableau Desktop 2020.1 or older to open the workbook.

Option 2

Upgrade the data source:
1. Click on the Data Source tab.
2. In the Upgrade Data Source dialog, click OK.
3. Navigate back to the dashboard.

Option 3

If "Error Code: 37CE01A3. Microsoft Excel (legacy) is not supported by this version of Tableau" occurs when trying to upgrade a data source, add a new data source that uses the same Excel sheet, and then replace the data source.

Cause

Beginning with Tableau 2020.2, legacy Excel and Text connections are no longer supported.
