Error "Could not lock file" Connecting to Access

When you try to connect to Microsoft Access from Tableau Desktop, the following error might occur:

An error occurred while communicating with Microsoft Access Database.
Unable to connect to the server. Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.

Microsoft JET database error 0x80004005: Could not lock file.

This error is not specific to Tableau, and it has no single resolution. The following is a list of troubleshooting steps.

Work with your IT team to verify the following:
  • The database is closed on the system and other users are not editing the database.
  • Access does not have any limitations on the maximum number of locks.
  • You have read and write privileges to the database.


This error is generated by Microsoft Access and passed through to Tableau Desktop.
