Issue

When retrieving string column data from a table on Snowflake, the following error occurs:

[Snowflake][Support] (50311) Error converting invalid input with source encoding UTF-8 using ICU. Rejected bytes began with: <two characters>.
 

Examples of the two characters include:

  • FF
  • 86

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Tableau Server
  • Snowflake

Resolution

In Snowflake, use a named file format that has the correct ENCODING file format option set for the string input data.

Cause

Invalid UTF-8 characters were detected by Snowflake. The default ENCODING file format option when creating a named file format in Snowflake is UTF-8.
