Error "connect() failed: errno = 10061" Connecting to Hadoop Hive

When you try to connect to Hortonworks Hadoop Hive data source, one of the following errors might occur:

[Hortonworks][Hardy] (22) Error from ThriftHiveClient: connect() failed: errno = 10061


[Hortonworks][Hardy] (34) Error from Hive: connect() failed: errno = 10061


  • Tableau Desktop 
  • Hortonworks Hadoop Hive


The following troubleshooting steps might solve the issue:
  1. Follow the instructions in Connect to Your Data in Tableau Help to ensure that:
    • The correct drivers are installed.
    • The appropriate port is selected.
    • The correct Hive Server (HiveServer or HiveServer2) is selected.
  2. Restart the Hortonworks Hadoop Hive server.
  3. Add exceptions to firewall and anti-virus software for communication to Hive server. For more information, see Internet Access Requirements in Tableau Help.
  4. If the issue continues, contact Hortonworks Support.


The following are possible causes of this issue:

  • Incorrect port and/or Hive Service defined in connection.
  • Network issues.
  • The Hive server is not started.
