Error "com.tableausoftware.commandline.commons.ReportableException: Failed to activate key" or "(lmgrd) Invalid License File"

When activating a key with 'tsm licenses activate', the following error message is returned: "com.tableausoftware.commandline.commons.ReportableException: Failed to activate key: <key>".

If lmgrd is manually started using:

/var/opt/tableau/tableau_server/data/tabsvc/services/licenseservice_0.10500.18.0109.1050/bin/lmgrd -c /var/opt/tableau/tableau_server/data/tabsvc/services/licenseservice_0.10500.18.0109.1050/bin/tableau.lic -l /var/opt/tableau/tableau_server/data/tabsvc/logs/licenseservice/tablicsrv.log -z -s

it returns:

23:11:36 (lmgrd) Invalid License File

  • Tableau Server 10.5.0
  • Linux

As a workaround, remove the executable permissions from tableau.lic using chmod:

sudo chmod a-x /var/opt/tableau/tableau_server/data/tabsvc/services/licenseservice_0.<version>/bin/tableau.lic

where <version> is the version string appended to the licenseservice_0 directory.

This behavior is related to a known issue with ID 694779 which is currently under investigation.

Additional Information

tsm status -v will show:

'Tableau Server License Manager 0' is in an error state.

tsm stop or tsm restart will output:

Service failed to stop properly. Run tsm status -v for detailed status.
