Issue

When connecting to Cloudera Impala using SSL, the following error might occur:

Unable to connect to the ODBC Data Source. Check that the necessary drivers are installed and that the connection properties are valid.

[Cloudera][ThriftExtension] (5) Error occurred while contacting server: No more data to read.. This could be because you are trying to establish a non-SSL connection to a SSL-enabled server.

Unable to connect to the server "<server address>". Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database.

Environment

  • Tableau Desktop
  • Cloudera Impala
  • SSL

Resolution

  1. Download the attached Tableau Data Customization (.tdc) file
  2. Edit the file to specify the file path to the trusted certificates.
  3. Add the .tdc file to your My Tableau Repository\Datasources folder.

Note: For the TrustedCerts= value, you do not need the double quotation mark for the file path. For more information on .tdc files, see Customize and Tune ODBC Connections.

If the error continues to occur after adding the .tdc file, ensure that your .tdc file is in the correct repository location.
  1. In Tableau Desktop, select File > Repository Location.
  2. Move the .tdc file to the location specified by File > Repository Location.
Important: Tableau does not test or support TDC files. These files should be used as a tool to explore or occasionally address issues with your data connection. Creating and maintaining TDC files requires careful manual editing, and there is no support for sharing these files.
